About the Project
One of the largest community projects ever undertaken by the Mountaineer Chapter was the construction of a handicapped accessible fishing pier on the Tygarts Valley River Backwaters.
This project was designed to make fishing more inclusive and accessible, ensuring that individuals with physical disabilities have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and participate in one of West Virginia’s most cherished pastimes.
Community Partnerships
The pier was made possible through the combined efforts and generosity of several local organizations and businesses. Major contributors included:
Mountaineer Chapter IWLA
Randolph County Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs (HOFNOD)
Elks BPOE Lodge 1135
West Virginia Division of Natural Resources
WV Paving
Central Supply
Why It Matters
The handicapped accessible fishing pier stands as a lasting example of what can be accomplished through community collaboration. It has opened up fishing opportunities to individuals and families who may not otherwise have had access, reflecting the chapter’s mission of conservation, recreation, and inclusivity.
