About the Program
The Fifth Grade Science Field Day is a cooperative program that brings together the Randolph County Board of Education, WV Division of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, the Mountaineer Institute, and the Mountaineer Chapter of the IWLA.
Each year, every fifth-grade student in Randolph County participates in this program, providing a unique, hands-on outdoor learning experience in conservation and natural sciences.
How It Works
Students are divided into groups of about 50.
Half the groups attend in the fall, and half attend in the spring.
Each group spends a full day at the Mountaineer Chapter grounds, rotating through a variety of nature-related and conservation classes taught by professionals.
Our Chapter’s Role
The Mountaineer Chapter provides:
Use of our lodge and over 1,000 acres of property, including two native brook trout streams, for educational activities.
A free lunch each year for approximately 350 students and 100 instructors and assistants.
Impact
This program has proven to be extremely popular with both students and teachers. Over time, it ensures that every Randolph County student has the opportunity to experience outdoor, conservation-focused education firsthand.
The program also raises awareness of the Izaak Walton League’s mission among students, parents, and educators, reinforcing the importance of protecting natural resources for future generations.
